Flight Plans [Mar. 7th, 2008|05:09 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

I’m flying out tomorrow morning on a research expedition, so these are the last baby hummingbird pictures I'll post until I get back from my trip.

I know it sounds trite to say, "My, haven't they grown!" But the truth is, they seem to have filled out (and filled the nest) overnight. And look at those iridescent green feathers!

Shh, don’t tell them I said this, but I’m thinking they’re a little behind the growth curve for
baby hummers their age. Still, for the first time since they hatched sixteen days ago, you can almost picture what they'll look like when they're full-grown.

My husband promised he'll take pictures while I'm away. I hope he gets some good shots; if so, I’ll share them when I get back.* Since they'll most likely be full-fledged fledglings by the 22nd day, I imagine they'll be taking flight lessons in a few days. As the expert from the Hummingbird Rescue Society suggested,** I’ve put a soft blanket at the base of the tree to cushion potential falls. It's the least I can do, because, as [info]britlitfantwin says, "they’re a flight risk right now."

See you on Thursday. If something exciting and/or important happens in the meantime, please leave me a note…You know I’m always hungry for good news!

*If you're on my f-list and you want a digital copy of a hummingbird photo, just drop me an email with a description and the date I originally posted it.

**By the way, the expert thinks they’re part of the Costa’s Hummingbird species

If you think they'd like any particular pictures, just let me know and I'll email the originals to you.

I'm so, so touched to hear that your kids are enjoying watching the hummingbirds grow.

I'll miss the hummingbirds, too. And most definitely, I'll also miss you. BUT I'm excited about this leg of my journey.

Hope you're having fun on the campaign trail. And though I haven't had time to respond to your wonderful, celebratory news, I do hope you know how very happy I am for you. Your awards are so well deserved.

PS I, too, hope that morphed Peepy-Grover toy gets manufactured. Maybe your Santa figure can make it happen. :)

That feed-me manoeuvre looks like it's kind of hard on the neck. Look at the iridescent green on their little wings. They're finally starting to look more like birds than tiny porcupines. They're growing so fast, though, are you sure you haven't been slipping them tiny twinkies?

Thank you.

But no, I'm not packed. I'm such a procrastinator. It's so much more fun to talk about hummingbirds than to coordinate outfits for traveling. Pfft. Especially since I don't think my flip-flops will be suitable attire where I'm headed.

toe socks in your fleece flip-flops might keep you warm enough :)

It's a wonder they don't get kinks in their necks, isn't it?

Twinkies would probably stunt their growth.

I love the shimmery green on their feathers. They're starting to look more like Mama.

It's a wonder they don't get a stiff neck! Thank you for posting all the photos. Have you thought about doing a book using them? I think kids would love a look at the personal journey of their growth.

Have a safe trip!
